Bro. Lucius Young

Thank you so much for all who were able to make it to Brother Lucius Young 99th Birthday Celebration. It truly was a memorable and historical moment for the fraternity and us. To be in the same place and presence of a brother who knew our founders of our organization. I know I am still in shock to have seen and heard Brother Young sing the fraternity hymn effortless, love and passion. Special Thank you to our Regional Director Ray Smith and State Director Roy Edmonds for being present on this special day in Spring Hill, FL (Tampa Bay area). Brothers please start brainstorming now for next year. We will make Brother Young’s 100th Birthday HUGE! Please see attached few pictures.

Bro. Lucius Young

bro. kevin christian shares with us more about bro. young.

Bro. Lucius Young joined Alpha Chapter in 1932, is a DSC Member and a past president of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Chapter in Washington, DC for many years. He turned 99 years old recently and lives in Florida. What is so interesting about this entire story, is that last Sunday, I had lunch with his line brother, Bro. Mervin Orlando Parker, who is 96 years old. When I told Bro. Parker that Bro. Young lives in Florida, he said, that we pledged together, Alpha Chapter in 1932 at Howard.

Man, wouldn’t it had been something to get them together. However, Bro. Parker is in a wheel chair and although he is still sharp, he tends to forget from time to time. But what a blessing man….

LIS Sponsors the Urban League

first off, i must apologize for not posting this earlier. bro. tracy morris is doing a fantastic job in the western region communicating various chapter activities. if not for his hard work, i wouldn’t be able to share stories like this.

LIS Sponsors the Urban League

The Brothers of the Lambda Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. aided in sponsoring the Urban League by participating in its 2008 Urban League Golf Classic which was held on Friday, May 2nd, 2008 at the beautiful Sycuan Resort and Golf Course. The Urban League of San Diego County is a non-profit, non-partisan, civil rights, and community based that serves San Diego County. Primarily working with Black and other and other ethnic communities. The Urban League works to close the equality gap for all people at all economic levels and various stages of life giving people an opportunity to give back as volunteers.

Two programs benefitting from 2008 Urban League Golf Classic are the “21st Century Youth Leadership Academy” and the “Urban Scholarship Fund”.

LIS Sponsors the Urban League

The 21st Century Youth Leadership Academy
The 21st Century Youth Leadership Academy, through innovative skill building exercises, tries to improve the education outcomes for urban youth. The Academy’s goals are to empower students to organize board meetings, social action projects, develop public speaking skills, prepare for college and careers by listening to guest speakers from various colleges and professions and receive interactive lesson plans in financial education, entrepreneurship, and social justice.

Urban Scholarship Fund
Scholarships are awarded to deserving students pursuing college. Scholarship applicants are encouraged to achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, attend an accredited two or four year college as a full time student beginning in the Fall of 2008, exhibit a financial need , and demonstrate a strong commitment to civic participation through involvement in school, work, and community activities. Additional application points will be given to students enrolled in the Urban League’s Youth Leadership Academy. Scholarship recipients are partnered with a carefully selected mentor until the completion of their college degree. In addition, students, funders, and mentors are encouraged to participate in periodic evaluations examining the scope of effective services.

LIS Sponsors the Urban League

The Brother of LIS are proud to have had this wonderful opportunity to take part in this most charitable event and are looking forward to a continuing to develop a fruitful relationship with The San Diego urban League. Phi Beta Sigma is a historically black fraternity founded in 1914. The fraternity strives toward its founders’ ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service to the community. From its inception, the original Founders, A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown, conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves or their families, the founders held a deep conviction they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction is mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity”. For more information on Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity please visit our National website or San Diego Chapters’ website.

1956 Founder’s Day Banquet

1956 Founder's Day Banquet

From the collection of Bro. Francis L. Hall (Alpha Chapter 1935). The 1956 Founder’s Day Banquet, Friday, January 13th! They had the banquet and then had the after party from midnight to 3 a.m. at the Dunbar Hotel.

Read about the Dunbar Hotel. Like I said before, it is just interesting to read the history of the frat and the history of the various decades.

Alpha Alpha Chapter 1972

Alpha Alpha Chapter 1972

Man, the history from the 1970’s. It is just interesting to see how fraternity evolved from the various decades.

This picture was taken from the 1972 Forcean Yearbook at Wilberforce University. This book is full of history. Pictures of Sammy Davis, Jr., Vernon Jordan, Andrew Young, Julian Bond and for Homecoming 1972, Wilbeforce had the Fifth Dimension.

Nothing like the 1970s.
