Under Wilkins&#8217; administration, the NAACP grew to include 1,700 chapters nationwide.<\/li>\n<li>In 1895, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Church_Terrell\">Mary Church Terrell<\/a> was appointed to the Board of Education in Washington, D.C. and she also co-founded the National Association for Colored women.<\/li>\n<li>The FIRST European country that sent the explorers to Africa was Portugal. They arrived in the late 1400&#8217;s and began to capture and ship Africans to Europe as slaves (so Portugal started the WHOLE thing in the 1400&#8217;s).<\/li>\n<li>America&#8217;s FIRST poet of African descent was a 16 year old slave by the name of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucy_Terry\">Lucy Terry Prince<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The ALL BLACK town of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicodemus%2C_Kansas\">Nicodemus<\/a> was settled in Kansas. The town was settled by former slaves during the Reconstruction period.<\/li>\n<li>In 1960, a dance craze was introduced with the exact same name as a number #1 hit record called &#8220;The Twist&#8221; by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chubby_Checker\">Chubby Checker<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The gold medal awarded annually to an African American for the highest achievement in his\/her field of activity is named the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spingarn_Medal\">Spingarn Medal<\/a> which was instituted in 1914 by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_Elias_Spingarn\">Joel Elias Spingarn<\/a>, who was chairman of the board of the NAACP at that time.<\/li>\n<li>Former Zulu chief <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Lutuli\">Albert J. Lutuli<\/a> shared the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in South Africa.
