Known as the &#8220;Godfather Of Soul&#8221;, he encouraged young blacks to have pride in themselves.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_L._Gravely%2C_Jr.\">Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.<\/a> paved the way for black Americans to rise in rank in the US Navy by becoming the first black commander of a Navy Ship, and in 1971 became the first black rear admiral.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_T._Wright\">Dr. Louis T. Wright<\/a> became famous for his research in cancer and founded the Cancer Research Center in Harlem Hospital in NYC.<\/li>\n<li>The TALLEST mountain in Africa is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilimanjaro\">Mt. Kilimanjaro<\/a> in Tanzania. Its central cone, Kibo, rises to 19,341 feet.<\/li>\n<li>The literary figure who came to be called the poet laureate of the Negro race was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langston_Hughes\">Langston Hughes<\/a>. His first book of poems entitled <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Weary-Blues-Langston-Hughes\/dp\/B000NP5RYQ\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1203270687&#038;sr=8-3\"><em>The Weary Blues<\/em><\/a> was published in 1926.<\/li>\n<li>The court case of Margaret vs. Commonwealth of Virginia resulted in desegregation of interstate bus travel in 1946.<\/li>\n<li>In the 1800&#8217;s, rodeo rider <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Pickett\">Bill Pickett<\/a> perfected the technique of bulldogging which involved wrestling a steer to the ground and reputedly biting its lip.<\/li>\n<li>The first African American to serve in the Texas Senate since 1883 was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbara_Jordan\">Barbara Jordan<\/a> in 1966. In 1972, she was elected to represent Texas in the US Congress.<\/li>\n<li>In the 19th centruy, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Granville_Woods\">Granville T. Woods<\/a> became known as the Black Edison for his work in electrical engineering. His induction telegraph system allowed communication between train engineers.<\/li>\n<li>The choreographer from Texas who formed a world famous dance theater troupe in New York City was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alvin_Ailey\">Alvin Ailey<\/a>. His troupe was featured at the opening of the John F.
