In 1971, Charley Pride became the FIRST African American to be named country music&#8217;s &#8216;Entertainer Of The Year&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Cuffe\">Paul Cuffe<\/a> believed in sending freed slaves to live in Africa and in 1815 he paid for the settlement of 38 blacks in the British Colony of Sierra Leone.<\/li>\n<li>The FIRST African American Woman to receive an R.N. degree was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Mahoney\">Mary Mahoney<\/a> in 1879.<\/li>\n<li>The FIRST black African nation to win its independence from colonial rule was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghana\">Ghana<\/a> in 1957 [a former British colony called &#8220;the Gold Coast&#8221;].<\/li>\n<li>In 1976, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Joplin\">Scott Joplin<\/a> received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for the ragtime opera <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treemonisha\"><em>Treemonisha<\/em><\/a>, an opera that he had written 60 years earlier.<\/li>\n<li>The prizefighter who regained the heavyweight crown 20 years after Muhammad Ali took it away from him in 1974 was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.georgeforeman.com\/\">George Foreman<\/a>. In 1994, George Foreman defeated Michael Moorer by knockout and regained the Heavyweight Champion title.<\/li>\n<li>Well known editor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aaregistry.com\/african_american_history\/329\/Robert_Lee_Vann_a_publishing_original___\">Robert Lee Vann<\/a> edited Pittsburgh&#8217;s widely read African newspaper called <em>The Courier<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The youngest black artist to have a syndicated comic strip was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robbarmstrong.com\/\">Robb Armstrong<\/a> in 1989. At age 26, Armstrong&#8217;s comic strip was called <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/comics.com\/comics\/jumpstart\/index.html\">Jump Start<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>The FIRST black pro team to play basketball were the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dayton_Rens\">Rens<\/a>.
