He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1912. He was a clergyman in North Carolina, having served as a Missionary from 1901-1905. He was Pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church in Charlotte from 1905-1912, Pastor of First Street Baptist Church in Winston Salem from 1912-1918 and Pastor of Third Baptist Church in Washington D.C. from 1918 through the end of his life in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>He served as a Trustee of Shaw University, President of the N.C. Baptist Convention, Executive Committee for the Lock Cary Baptist Foreign Missionary Society. Bro.
