Conclave 1924 – Philadelphia, PA

This was taken from the 1964 Conclave Journal (50th Anniversary Edition). Above you will see the 50th Anniversary Conclave Agenda, below you will see the Conclave Delegates for the 11th Annual Conclave of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. This Conclave established the National Program of Bigger and Better Business. The first Conclave was held in 1916, the second Conclave was held in 1920 (no Conclaves in 1917, 1918, or 1919 due to World War I), so I wonder why this one was noted as the 11th Annual? I thought it might be a typo, however, I just acquired an original 1924 Conclave Program and it says 11th Annual Conclave. It was done at the YMCA @ 1724 Christian Street in Philadelphia, PA. In addition they did it in conjunction with the Boule of AKA Sorority. The 1925 Crescent (a rare copy that I found at Howard University- but not listed in our history), highlights a few pictures from this Conclave.

Front Row — L-R, Founder Taylor, third from the left, Dr.I.L. Scruggs, 3rd from the right is Bro. John Woodhous (who was National President at the time out of Baltimore, Maryland).

Back Row — The Brother Holding the Banner was from Zeta Chapter(Morris Brown College in Atlanta) and appears in a number of other early Crescents and Conclave pictures, but never identified. The sixth brother from the left in the back row (dead center) is Bro. Wirt Walton, who has been listed as a charter member of Delta Chapter @ Kansas State University. Bro. Walton went on to become a renowned orchestra/band leader and taught at Sumner High School in St. Louis, MO and Harris Stowe Teacher’s College in St. Louis.
