- In 1941, A. Philip Randolph threatened President Franklin D. Roosevelt with a march on Washington of 50.000 negroes to protest unfair employment practices. The march was called off when the President agreed to Randolph’s demand for reform.
- In 1919, a BLACK MAN by the name of James A. Jones invented a vertical spring that made it possible for cars to have convertible tops.
- The Zambezi River is the source of the Victoria Falls. It rushes over a mile wide cliff to form a falls twice as wide as Niagara Falls.
- In 1991, Anita Hill charged Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas with sexual harassment during his confirmation hearings. This drew national attention to the sexual harassment issue.
- The FIRST African American to ever receive an Academy Award was Hattie McDaniel in 1939 for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Gone With The Wind.
- Ernest Everett Just was renowned for his 20th century research in cytology. He studied cells and his specialty was the structure of animal cells.
- The ancient city of Timbouctou may be found in Mali. By the late 1400′, the city was a center for African commerce, education and culture.
- During World War II, a BLACK WOMAN by the name of Josephine Baker helped the Allies as a spy.
- A black explorer by the name of Matthew Henson accompanied Robert Peary to the North Pole. It is widely believed that Matthew Henson arrived at the North Pole 45 minutes before Robert Peary did.
- The famous basketball team which played its first home games in Chicago’s Savoy Ballroom was The Harlem Globetrotters.
