- The FIRST BLACK STUDENT to enroll at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) was James Meredith in 1962. His enrollment caused rioting and US Marshals were sent to Oxford, Mississippi.
- Slave songs that combine African rhythms WITH biblical scripture are “Old Negro Spirituals“. The more popular ones are “Go Down Moses“, “Deep River” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot“.
