- The FIRST RELIGIOUS GROUP in the American Colonies to issue an official protest against the slave trade were The Quakers (or Society of Friends) in 1696.
- In Botswana, the name “Simba” means “lion” (as in The Lion King).
- The NAACP leader who said “No American is required to earn his rights as a citizen” was Roy Wilkins. Under Wilkins’ administration, the NAACP grew to include 1,700 chapters nationwide.

- The FIRST European country that sent the explorers to Africa was Portugal. They arrived in the late 1400’s and began to capture and ship Africans to Europe as slaves (so Portugal started the WHOLE thing in the 1400’s).
- America’s FIRST poet of African descent was a 16 year old slave by the name of Lucy Terry Prince.
- The ALL BLACK town of Nicodemus was settled in Kansas. The town was settled by former slaves during the Reconstruction period.
- In 1960, a dance craze was introduced with the exact same name as a number #1 hit record called “The Twist” by Chubby Checker.
- The gold medal awarded annually to an African American for the highest achievement in his/her field of activity is named the Spingarn Medal which was instituted in 1914 by Joel Elias Spingarn, who was chairman of the board of the NAACP at that time.
- Former Zulu chief Albert J. Lutuli shared the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in South Africa. He was the LEADER of the African National Congress.
