- Under the Slave Fugitive Act of 1850, a slave named Anthony Burns was returned to the south. This act made it easy for masters of runaway slaves to reclaim them.
- The first black manager of a major baseball team was Frank Robinson. He signed with the Cleveland Indians as player-manager in October 1974.
- George Baker (aka Father Divine) founded the Father Divine Peace Mission. During the Great Depression his movement furnished food and other aid to thousands of impoverished blacks.
- Dr. Theodore Lawless won the Spingarn Medal in 1954 for his cures of several skin diseases.

- In 1865, a Virginia slave decided to mail himself to freedom by packaging himself in a 3′ x 2′ x 2’8″ box. He arrived safely 26 hours later at the Anti Slavery Society in Philadelphia.
- The first Black Miss America crowned was Vanessa Lynn Williams from Tarrytown, New York. She served from Sept 1983 to July 1984. She was replaced by the second Black Miss America named Suzette Charles who finished out the reign to Septmber 1984.
- In the 1960’s, Floyd B. McKissick developed a town named Soul City. It was located in North Carolina to provide new business opportunities for African Americans.
