I have been gone for a moment! But this great piece of history came my way this weekend, so I thought that I would share today, because many of you have probably never seen proof like this! These pictures are from the 1984 “Delvian” Yearbook from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
Bro. Jerry Rice, is widely regarded as the greatest wide receiver ever and one of the greatest players in National Football League (NFL) history. An all-time leader in every major statistical category for wide receivers, Rice was selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times (19861996, 1998, 2002) and named All-Pro 10 times in his 20 NFL seasons. He won three Super Bowl rings playing for the San Francisco 49ers and an AFC Championship with the Oakland Raiders.
He was also HUGE at Mississippi Valley State in his day as well. Here are a few pictures for you to check out. Check out the “editorial in-accuracy” in the Phi Beta Sigma Chapter picture, and look at the KKY Band Fraternity Picture, look at their hand sign, and notice the Sigma Picture, no hand sign. One of those things that makes you go humm?
Off to Denver for a few days, enjoy your week! FYI, if you are still looking for a hotel room for the Conclave the Courtyard by Marriott in New Orleans French Quarter has King Beds for $99 a night, only a 5 minute walk from host hotel. $40 savings a day over 4-5 days really adds up. Or you still can get a double for $119 which includes breakfast for two (lower than the conference rate, humm?).Today in Sigma History – May 12, 2009 – Delta Phi Chapter 1984 – Bro. Jerry Rice, Mississippi Valley State University

Bro. Christian:
Thanks for this post. This is the first proof I have ever seen that Bro. Jerry Rice is a Sigma, as well as Bro. Willie Totten who was the quarterback on this record setting NCAA scoring football team in 1984. Unfortunately, Bro. Totten was not given the same opportunity to play in the NFL as Bro. Rice. At the time, outside of Doug Williams, African-American quarterbacks were not given a chance to play in the NFL if they were from a small HBCU college.
I’m a photo editor with ESPN The Magazine. We’re doing an article on the Best College Football players ever, and we’re looking for photos of Jerry Rice when he was at MVSU. Do you have any photos of him that you can send to me and/or do you know of any photographers that have photos of Jerry during his time at MVSU (preferably playing football; action or head shots).
Sincerely,
John Klein/ESPN
Glad to see Bro Jerry has shown that he is a true Bro of PHI BETA SIGMA, so proud of how our Bro carried himself thru life in the NFL and did not do all the hoopla as the other frat (THE Q’s) Bro Jerry is still making things happen on ESPN. GOMAB!!!!!!
