Published: January 19, 2011Children gravitated to Richmond elementary teacher and principal William Henry Harris, and he made sure the kids came first.
“He did a lot with the kids — science projects, helping them to put on plays and to do displays during holidays,” said his son, Jerrold Rodman Harris of Bloomsburg, Pa.
Mr. Harris, who died Jan. 12 at age 79 in a Richmond hospital of complications of a brain tumor, began his career in education in 1958 at J. Andrew Bowler Elementary School. He taught sixth grade and seventh-H – for “high seventh grade” in a time when seventh grade still was in elementary school and there were low-seven and a high-seven classes.
