  1. Boston, Massachusetts is where you may visit the OLDEST African American church. Named the “African American Meeting House“, it was chartered in 1806 with funds raised by Cato Gardner, an escaped slave.
  2. Two words which are leftover from the language of African slaves are Goober (meaning peanut) and Gumbo (meaning okra).
  3. The NAACP Field Secretary who was assassinated at his home in Jackson Mississippi in 1963 was Medgar Evers. He had investigated the cases of Emmett Till and other victims of racist killings.
  4. Gabon (located in Africa) is one of the continent’s RICHEST countries. Located on the western coast, Gabon produces iron, uranium and maganese.
  5. In 1936, the aim of the National Negro Congress was to improve labor conditions. Its first President was A. Philip Randolph.
  6. Thomas W. Stewart invented the self-wringing mop while Lloyd P. Ray invented the long handled dust pan. Remember that next time you all clean your house.
  7. Walter Sammons invented the heated hair comb.
  8. Sarah Boone invented an improvement to the ironing board, which was a curved narrow board which allowed for sleeves of garments to be stretched over it.
  9. George T. Sampson was granted the first US patent for a clothes dryer, which was for an improved rack for holding wet clothes near a heat source.
  10. John Standard invented an improvement to the refrigerator design.
