An Open Letter to the President – #1

Dear Mr. President:

Today is the day we celebrate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King; a day which has always had special meaning to and for me. For the twelve years that I served as the Executive Director of Phi Beta Sigma, I always worked in the office on this special day. In fact – I always worked on all holidays (derived from the term holy days), Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.  However on MLK Day, I always worked extra long as a tribute to a man who gave all that he had to make America live up to the ultimate goals of its founding fathers.

On this special day, I rededicate myself to the fulfillment of the ultimate goals of our Founders – the Founders of our great fraternity. Phi Beta Sigma is not great because of what it does – because it really does not do very much of what it was created to do. Phi Beta Sigma is great because of its ultimate goal-purpose.  The Founders of Phi Beta Sigma established a new fraternity on the campus of Howard University in the winter of 1914 because they did not feel that any organization existed which properly bound college trained men to the communities from which they had come. Our Founders developed a very simple and straight-forward formula. They said that the ultimate goal-purpose of college-trained men should be “Service??? to those from whom they had come – to all humanity. To be able to give the proper “Service???, our Founders believed that college-trained men should pursue the necessary “Scholarship??? – to gain the specific knowledge required to provide assistance to the community. And to be properly oriented and organized, our Founders believed that men should be bound together in a fraternal “Brotherhood???.

As I sit and write this letter to you today and over the days that it will take to complete it; any honest Sigma will have to admit that we are far from the goal-purpose of our Founders. There are specific reasons for our being off track. I wish to share those reasons with you; and to share those reasons with the general membership beyond you who, like you, may not be aware of the reasons for our being so far off track.

more Founders’ Day 2007

Today is Founders Day; a day for great celebration, a day for deep pride and a day for even greater reflection.

When you find yourself up to your ass in alligators is usually when you remember that your initial intention was to drain the damn swamp!!!

Phi Beta Sigma started off with very good and worthy intentions. Our Founders were men of great character, great concern, and great vision. It is more than appropriate that we pause on this day to think deeply about the organization to which they gave life and to insure that we who follow their lead are still on the path that they set forth for us.

When our dear Founders joined hands in fraternity on this day some ninety-three years ago, they did so in the presence of two existing fraternities and with the knowledge of the formation of a third. And yet, they felt the need to establish another organization rather than to seek membership in either of those which then existed. Who were these men and what was their motivation???

Putting Virtual-Sigma Back On Line

In 1978, I sensed that something was going very wrong with Phi Beta Sigma. I did not know exactly what was wrong; but I knew definitely that we were in for a long decline.

I will not elaborate at this time; but I will say this – several of our past officers wanted an organization much different from that which was conceived by our Founders. They chose the critical period when we were trying to convert from a part-time to a full-time operation to strike. Essentially – because of their intervention, Phi Beta Sigma never made the necessary conversion. Instead, P.R. was used to replace actual service to humanity.

I am writing today to ask you to do two things.

(1) I want you to take the time to read three essays that I have written. I know that some of you have read them previously; but I beg you to reread them now.

The first enclosed essay, “A Conflict of Models” tells how we moved from the structure that the Founders left to us to the one we operate by today. The second essay, “The Birth of G. O. M. A. B” tells how we slowly turned our backs on the motto the Founders gave us – “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity” (which focused on bringing benefits to those outside of Sigma) to the self promoting[…]theme.

The third essay “Established Upon the Principles”, is yet unfinished. I had abandoned finishing it because I didn’t think that anybody cared. Kevin Christian and others have strengthened me to fight for the Founders. I began it in my heart; I trust you to finish it in yours.

Please read all three essays. Please discuss them among yourselves and pass them on to every committed Sigma that you know. If you have any questions, write them down and e-mail me. I will answer any question that you ask and I can answer. If you have a burning question, call me. Once you understand what must be done, tell every Sigma that you know. And when people try to beat on you, stand up and push them back in the name of the Founders.
