An Open Letter to the President – #1

Dear Mr. President:

Today is the day we celebrate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King; a day which has always had special meaning to and for me. For the twelve years that I served as the Executive Director of Phi Beta Sigma, I always worked in the office on this special day. In fact – I always worked on all holidays (derived from the term holy days), Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.  However on MLK Day, I always worked extra long as a tribute to a man who gave all that he had to make America live up to the ultimate goals of its founding fathers.

On this special day, I rededicate myself to the fulfillment of the ultimate goals of our Founders – the Founders of our great fraternity. Phi Beta Sigma is not great because of what it does – because it really does not do very much of what it was created to do. Phi Beta Sigma is great because of its ultimate goal-purpose.  The Founders of Phi Beta Sigma established a new fraternity on the campus of Howard University in the winter of 1914 because they did not feel that any organization existed which properly bound college trained men to the communities from which they had come. Our Founders developed a very simple and straight-forward formula. They said that the ultimate goal-purpose of college-trained men should be “Service??? to those from whom they had come – to all humanity. To be able to give the proper “Service???, our Founders believed that college-trained men should pursue the necessary “Scholarship??? – to gain the specific knowledge required to provide assistance to the community. And to be properly oriented and organized, our Founders believed that men should be bound together in a fraternal “Brotherhood???.

As I sit and write this letter to you today and over the days that it will take to complete it; any honest Sigma will have to admit that we are far from the goal-purpose of our Founders. There are specific reasons for our being off track. I wish to share those reasons with you; and to share those reasons with the general membership beyond you who, like you, may not be aware of the reasons for our being so far off track.

more Founders’ Day 2007

Today is Founders Day; a day for great celebration, a day for deep pride and a day for even greater reflection.

When you find yourself up to your ass in alligators is usually when you remember that your initial intention was to drain the damn swamp!!!

Phi Beta Sigma started off with very good and worthy intentions. Our Founders were men of great character, great concern, and great vision. It is more than appropriate that we pause on this day to think deeply about the organization to which they gave life and to insure that we who follow their lead are still on the path that they set forth for us.

When our dear Founders joined hands in fraternity on this day some ninety-three years ago, they did so in the presence of two existing fraternities and with the knowledge of the formation of a third. And yet, they felt the need to establish another organization rather than to seek membership in either of those which then existed. Who were these men and what was their motivation???

Great Giants – Slipping Away – Without Honor; Without Notice

For a number of years before his passing, Brother Francis L. Hall lived at the Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Washington, DC – about fifteen minutes from the front door of the Sigma Headquarters. Until his last days, Bro. Hall was fantastically lucid and full of wonderful stories. Once, when the Washington chapters celebrated his … Read moreGreat Giants – Slipping Away – Without Honor; Without Notice

Hotep To the Keepers of the Dream – The Brothers of the Dove:

Several weeks ago, in the middle of the night, a soft voice whispered to me in my sleep. The voice said to me, “You must go to Kansas State University. The answer that you have searched for over more than a quarter-century is waiting for you in Kansas”.

Kansas? Manhattan, Kansas? What the hell could I possibly find in Manhattan, Kansas?

The answer came back, “You will find yourself in Manhattan, Kansas.” And then the soft voice fell silent.

I was born 61 years ago in Manhattan. Manhattan, New York (Harlem Hospital to be exact). I have searched, without success thus far, to establish the exact moment of my birth in Manhattan on February 14, 1945. A little bit more than a quarter century before my birth, the Delta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma was born on the campus of the Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.

The Founders of Phi Beta Sigma lived, and personified, the principles that they established and left to us. A. Langston Taylor had heard of the fraternities on the campus of Howard University before his acceptance. And Abram Langston Taylor had made promise to God that if he were ever able to attend Howard University; he would work to establish a new fraternity – a fraternity that would exist under a new mandate. Brother Taylor’s personal motto was, “Culture for Service”. Brother Taylor promised God that if he were ever able to attend Howard University, he would establish a fraternity dedicated to sharing the benefits that he had received with those who had not been quite so fortunate. With the establishment of Phi Beta Sigma, that promise to God was fulfilled. Founder Taylor exemplified the principle of Service.
