don’t make it about you. make it about your Brother

For those of you who don’t know, i do a lil improv on the side with Bats Improv in San Francisco. After taking the last year off, I recently returned to the stage and am still shaking off the rust. One of the things pointed out to me was that I was “gagging” a lot, meaning I’m doing things on stage just to get a laugh instead of working within the context of the scene. It reminded me of something mentioned in a class. “If you work to make your scene partners look good, the rest will take care of itself.

I wanted to impart the same message in the context of Sigma. Over the past year, I’ve been exposed to the ugly side of an international organization with all the back room deals and political nonsense. I had been naive to think that I could contribute in an international capacity and not be affected by the political maneuvering. As I’ve shifted my focus to the regional and local levels, I find myself content to be the guy behind the scenes supporting the direction of those leading the charge.

And it’s this thought about making my Brothers look good, that I’m leaving you with today. I’m slowly getting into the loop for Bro. Forbes efforts at planning the 2007 Western Regional Conference. I’m approaching it in supporting his vison and making sure he gets all the accolades for a successful regional conference. This isn’t about me getting props or working my way up the political landscape or planting seeds for getting into an office later down the road. It’s about making my Brother look good. I challenge you to do the same. Blue Phi!
