Frelinghysen University

Two years ago, Bro. Kevin Bembrige showed me the gradution program from the Frelinghysen University from 1922. On the program was the name of Founder A. Langston Taylor. Frelinghysen University was a part-time, evening, university for African Americans in the Washington, DC area. There is not much history on its early days, but under the direction of Dr. Anna J. Cooper, who took over in 1931, the university had a few good years until it closed in late 1940’s. The school provided social services, religious training, and educational programs for black working-class adults.

Bro. Francis L. Hall told me that Frelinghysen University was at 2nd and T Street, NW in Washington, DC (201 T. Street, NW) to be exact. The college disolved in the late 1940s. Here is rare picture of one of the classes held at the University from the collection of the the great photographer Addison N. Scurlock.
