  1. A BLACK MAN by the name of Clarence Otis Jr. became the CEO of Darden Restaurants, Inc in 2004. It is the largest casual dining operator in the nation, Darden Restaurants, Inc. operates Olive Garden and Red Lobster.
  2. The FIRST African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff was General Colin L. Powell.
  3. A BLACK MAN by the name of Norbert Rillieux revolutionized the sugar refining industry with his invention of the evaporator, which lowered the cost of manufacturing fine white sugar, in the 1800’s.
  4. The gorge in Tanzania, where the Leakey family found bones of people who lived 1.75 million years ago, is called Olduvai Gorge. The first discoveries were made in 1959.
  5. In 1952 A BLACK MAN by the name of Ralph Ellison wrote the groundbreaking novel Invisible Man about the African American as the Underground Man.
  6. The 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1870 and granted “suffrage rights” to African American men. Suffrage means the right to vote.
  7. In 1937 A BLACK MAN reigned as the Heavyweight Champion of the World for eleven straight years [1937 – 1948]. His name was Joe Louis aka The Brown Bomber.
  8. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech following his March on Washington, D.C.
  9. A BLACK MAN by the name of Bernard Shaw became famous as the black journalist who later became the principal Washington Anchor for CNN.
  10. The ancient name of Egypt is Kemet meaning “black land”.
