ROCK HILL — A group of Winthrop students traded the warmth of their beds Friday night for the chill of Dinkins Lawn to raise awareness about homelessness.
Members of Phi Beta Sigma spent the night in a cardboard shanty town on the grass next to Dinkins Hall as part of their fraternity’s national initiative – Sleep Out for the Homeless – which comes around once a year. Alumni members came out, too.
“We’re out there doing it for a greater cause,” said Bobby Kirkland, president of the Winthrop chapter. The fraternity also collected canned goods to be donated to a local charity.
